5 signs to redesign

5 Signs It’s Time to Redesign Your Business Website

If your website hasn’t changed in years, there’s a good chance it’s quietly costing you customers. Not in a dramatic way — no crash, no error message. Just a slow leak of people who land on your site, don’t like what they see, and click back to Google to find your competitor instead.

Here are five signs it’s time for a redesign, and what to do about each one.

1. It Doesn’t Work Properly on Mobile

Over 60% of Australian web traffic now comes from phones. If your site was built more than five or six years ago, there’s a real chance it wasn’t designed mobile-first — text too small, buttons hard to tap, images that don’t resize properly.

**Quick test:** Pull up your site on your own phone right now. If you find yourself pinching to zoom or struggling to find your phone number, your customers are having the same problem — and most of them won’t bother pushing through it.

2. It Takes More Than 3 Seconds to Load

Speed isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s a filter. Slow-loading sites lose visitors before a single word gets read, and Google factors load speed into how it ranks you in search results too.

Common culprits: oversized images, outdated hosting, bloated page builders with years of unused plugins stacked on top of each other. Often the fix isn’t a full rebuild — it’s better hosting and a cleanup.

3. You Can’t Update It Yourself (Or You’re Scared To)

A lot of older websites were built on custom code or outdated platforms that only the original developer understands. If you’ve lost contact with whoever built your site, or you’re too nervous to touch anything in case it breaks, your website has become a liability instead of a business tool.

A modern WordPress site should let you (or whoever supports you) make basic updates — new photos, updated hours, a fresh testimonial — without needing to call someone every time.

4. It Doesn’t Clearly Say What You Do or Who You Serve

Visit your own homepage and give yourself five seconds. Could a stranger tell what your business does, who it’s for, and how to contact you? If they’d have to scroll and hunt, you’re losing people at the first hurdle.

This is one of the most common issues I see with older sites — they were built around what looked good at the time, not around what actually gets a visitor to pick up the phone or fill in a form.

5. You’re Not Showing Up on Google for Your Own Services

Type in “[your service] + [your suburb]” and see where you land. If you’re nowhere on the first page — or your competitors consistently rank above you — your website’s structure is likely working against you rather than for you.

Older sites often lack the basic on-page SEO foundations (proper headings, clean structure, decent page speed, a connected Google Business Profile) that newer, well-built sites have from day one.

So, Redesign or Rebuild?

Not every website needs to be torn down and started from scratch. Sometimes a targeted refresh — new design, better hosting, cleaned-up structure — solves most of these issues without the cost of a full rebuild. Other times, particularly with very old or custom-coded sites, starting fresh on WordPress is genuinely the faster and cheaper path.

The only way to know which one you need is to actually look at what you’ve got.
