WordPress vs Wix for Tradies
WordPress vs Wix for Tradies: Which Wins?
Ask ten web designers whether WordPress or Wix is better and you will start an argument. Ask a tradie which one will get them more jobs and you will mostly get shrugs. That is the question that actually matters — so let us answer it properly: cost, ownership, Google rankings, and which platform suits a plumbing, electrical or building business in Australia.
Quick Verdict (for the TL;DR crowd)
- Just starting out, zero budget, want to DIY everything? Wix is fine.
- Serious about getting found on Google, want to own your site, planning to be in business for years? WordPress wins — and it is not close.
Now the detail.
Round 1: Upfront and Ongoing Cost
Wix advertises cheap monthly plans — roughly $20–$50 AUD a month depending on the plan. That sounds painless until you multiply it: $35/month is $1,260 over three years, and you still need to build the thing yourself.
WordPress itself is free. You pay for hosting (quality Australian-friendly hosting runs $10–$30 a month) and, usually, a designer to build the site ($800–$3,000 for a small business site). After that, your ongoing costs are hosting and a maintenance plan if you want one.
Three-year totals for a typical tradie site:
- Wix DIY: $900–$1,800 + 30+ hours of your evenings.
- WordPress with a freelancer: $1,500–$3,500 all up, professionally built.
Round 2: Who Owns the Website?
This is the point most tradies miss — and it is the most important one.
With Wix, you are renting. Your website lives on Wix’s platform, built with Wix’s tools. If you stop paying, your website disappears. If you want to leave, you cannot take the site with you — you rebuild from scratch.
With WordPress, you own everything. The site files, the database, the content. You can move hosts, change designers, add features — nobody can hold your website hostage. After 15 years in this industry, the number one reason business owners come to me is that their previous provider disappeared or locked them in. Ownership is protection.
Round 3: Google Rankings and SEO
When someone searches “plumber Bondi” or “electrician Parramatta”, Google rewards:
- Fast-loading, mobile-friendly sites
- Proper page structure (one clear heading per page, logical subheadings)
- Separate pages for separate services and suburbs
- Technical flexibility — schema markup, SEO plugins, clean URLs
WordPress does all of this natively, and plugins like Yoast SEO make it straightforward. Wix has improved enormously and covers the basics fine — but it still limits some technical SEO options, and sites with lots of pages or location targeting are clunkier to manage.
For a one-person operation relying on local searches, the practical difference is modest at first. Over two or three years of content and location pages, WordPress pulls ahead.
Round 4: Ease of Use
Wix’s editor is genuinely the easiest to learn — drag, drop, done. WordPress has a steeper first week, but the block editor is far more intuitive than its old reputation suggests, and your designer sets everything up so day-to-day edits (text, photos, prices) are simple.
Honest take: if you will never touch the site yourself and have no budget, Wix’s simplicity is a real advantage. If someone builds and maintains the site for you — like my clients, who just WhatsApp me when they need a change — the simplicity advantage disappears.
Flexibility and Growth
WordPress powers over 40% of the web for a reason: 60,000+ plugins for bookings, quote forms, e-commerce, review feeds, project galleries — almost anything a growing trade business needs. Wix covers common needs well but hits walls sooner.
Planning to add online booking, a WooCommerce store for spare parts, or suburb landing pages across your whole service area? WordPress grows with you. Wix eventually says “that is not possible on your plan.”
The Verdict for Tradies
Choose Wix if: you are brand new, genuinely have no budget for a designer, and just need something basic online this week.
Choose WordPress if: you want to own your website, rank on Google for your trade and suburbs, and treat your website as a long-term asset that brings in jobs.
For most established tradies, WordPress is the right call — which is why every website I build is WordPress, on hosting you control, with your domain in your name.
